Great Yarmouth Town 0, Tiptree United 3
Chock-full of players experienced at higher levels than the Ridgeons League, top-of-the-table
Tiptree unsurprisingly outclassed Yarmouth almost from the
outset. Manager Colin Wallington has taken several players from his old team – Maldon
Town – and with the enigmatic Richard Carter scouting out others
of quality, the Jammakers had no difficulty brushing aside the Bloaters’ weak challenge.
Nick Banham was again forced into changes and has yet to field the same side in consecutive
games this season. Adam Sewell, Chris Owen and Johnathan Watt were all missing injured from the team that succumbed to Dereham
last week while Lee Perry was also unavailable. Will Lewis, Olly Harrison and James
Underhill all returned while there was a first team debut for young Dominic
Smith.
There was a chance for Underhill as early as the first minute, but his shot from wide was
blocked for a corner. Several corners followed for both sides as the game went from end to end in the opening minutes and
Liam Bartley raced onto a Banham clearance to cross but ex-Dover Athletic ‘keeper Darren Smith collected.
However, it soon became apparent Tiptree were merely toying with Yarmouth like a cat plays with a mouse. And the visitors pounced after only nine minutes
to take the lead: Lee Owen, the much-travelled prolific forward, made ground down the right, took a return pass from Tommy
Noble in the box and shot on a tight angle between Banham and his left-hand post.
Yarmouth’s new-boy Smith saw his effort from a Mark Thompson corner go narrowly over, and indeed Smith
was not overawed, at times successfully challenging Owen in midfield. But when Tiptree inevitably resumed the offensive, Noble,
signed from AFC Sudbury in the summer, strode through a vacant defence only to shoot wide.
Toby Gorbould and Underhill both cleared off the home line from corners and there was
very little effective home attacking to relieve the pressure. Two bookings for Tiptree just before half time – Noble
for something said, and Owen for not retreating at a free kick – were completely unnecessary and out of context with
the game.
HT 0-1
Gorbould prevented a second goal after 48 minutes with a superb defensive job on another
former AFC Sudbury man Tom English, but Tiptree made it two-nil after 55 minutes when Noble seized on a clearance and shot
towards goal: Banham parried but Noble was first to reach the loose ball and netted unopposed.
Kieran Hack, who had replaced the luckless Bartley, did well to break through the Tiptree
rearguard for once but Damian Didwell’s shot went beyond the back post before the visitors did get their third. It came
after 85 minutes via a complete misunderstanding in the Yarmouth
midfield and English – a postman - was left in the clear to go round Banham and post his shot home unchallenged.
Tiptree broke through twice more in the closing minutes, Banham excelling himself to touch
one shot round for a corner while substitute Nelson hit the upright. In one last effort, Thompson had a good run into the
heart of the Tiptree defence but substitute Jacob Short’s effort went wide.
Yarmouth – Nick Banham, Toby Gorbould, Tommy Hurd (Hardy,
46), Jody Harrison (c), Will Lewis (Jacob Short, 57), Olly Harrison, Mark Thompson, Dominic Smith, Liam Bartley (Kieran Hack,
74), Damian Didwell, James Underhill.

DEREHAM TOWN 6, BLOATERS 0
FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round
The Yarmouth team line-up showed three
changes to that which lost to Hadleigh last week. Damian Didwell was recalled to the attack in place of James Underhill who was on the bench. Kieran
Hack came in for his second game since his return from Australia,
and with Olly Harrison unavailable Johnathan Watt returned to the midfield. Will Lewis was a late absentee after a slight
accident at home.
Yarmouth started brightly and a Chris Owen cross in the third minute was tipped over his bar by ‘keeper
Shaun Marshall for the first corner of the game but from Hack’s kick Jody Harrison’s back-to-goal shot slid wide.
Two minutes later, a Mark Thompson run on the right led to a throw-in for the Bloaters: Adam Sewell’s long throw found Didwell in the area but his header also went wide.
Sewell went down in a series of tackles and was replaced on only eleven minutes by Jordan Hardy.
West then had Dereham’s first chance but fired into Nick Banham’s waiting arms.
The opening goal came against the run of play in the 16th minute when Banham failed
to gather Greg Devlin’s cross from the right: Graham Barrett’s effort was blocked but Simon Mann followed up to
net for Dereham. As the Magpies began to press, Banham scooped a low ball round a post, then Mann nearly scored again but
his angled shot across Banham did not have enough pace to beat the ‘keeper.
Dereham were building patiently with plenty of possession but Yarmouth were still showing plenty
of fight and Liam Bartley’s shot from a penetrating through ball by Thompson was well held by Marshall. Dereham’s
injured Nicky Howell was replaced by Danny Beaumont, but it was the home side that scored again after 28 minutes in unfortunate
circumstances for Banham: the Bloaters’ ‘keeper miskicked his intended clearance aimed at Hack, the ball only
reaching Chris West whose short pass was stroked home by Mann for his second of the match.
Didwell tried a shot after winning a tackle but the ball went over, then good footwork by Owen
kept the ball in the home half and even Jody Harrison moved forward to support the attack.
Yarmouth
went very close after 34 minutes when an accurate Hack pass to Bartley saw the youngster shoot to the far side of goal where
Marshall produced a marvellous flying save at the expense
of a corner. Moments later Bartley was fouled and Owen’s free kick found Harrison again
up in support but a visiting foul ended the attack.
Banham produced a great save at the feet of Sam Willis before Yarmouth had another great chance to score after 38 minutes. Bartley threaded a pass through
to Didwell as the home defence opened up and Didwell’s angled shot beat Marshall
but flicked of the outside of the post and went behind for a goal kick.
Dereham then made their second substitution shortly before half time with Craig Terrington replacing
Willis.
Yarmouth would need to produce much more penetration in the second half as sitting off Dereham had only
allowed the accomplished Premier Division side to dictate the game.
HT: 2-0
The second period got off to a disastrous start as far as Yarmouth were concerned and Dereham
virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the next round with their third goal after just one minute: a low, driven cross
by Foley saw the Bloaters’ defence slow to react and substitute Beaumont had all the time in the world to stroke the
ball home from twelve yards.
It was looking like damage-limitation time for Yarmouth
as Dereham produced a wave of attacks but Tommy Hurd stood firm and Banham made some excellent saves.
On 55 minutes, Yarmouth brought on Underhill for Hack but two minutes later Banham took the plaudits
again with a magnificent double save that had even the home crowd applauding, diving to fingertip a shot along the line then
saving the follow-up shot while still on the ground!
As Yarmouth broke out of defence
for a rare attack, a free kick was awarded them 25 yards from goal but it failed to find a visiting player. Hurd and Banham
again defied home attempts to add to their score before Lee Perry returned from injury to replace Watt in the 63rd
minute. Hurd moved up to midfield and Yarmouth looked a bit more threatening from midfield
as he took on the home defence and created a chance for Didwell but Marshall
saved at his feet.
However, after 68 minutes the Dereham goal parade continued as Hayes played a great ball to Barrett
near the right bye-line and the midfielder sent over an inviting cross which Mann converted for his hat-trick.
Yarmouth plugged away but without conviction and Dereham added two more in the last ten minutes. Terrington
made it five after 80 minutes after receiving a cross from Sam Bryant who had been on the pitch but two minutes. Six minutes
later, Toby Gorbould brought down Bryant in the penalty area and skipper Adam Gusterson put away the spot kick.
Dereham – Shaun Marshall, Greg Devlin,
Brendan Foley, Daniel Cullington, Adam Gusterson (c), Adie Hayes, Nicky Howell (Danny Beaumont 22), Simon Mann, Chris West
(Sam Bryant 77), Graham Barrett, Sam Willis (Craig Terrington 40).
Yarmouth – Nick Banham, Adam Sewell (Jordan Hardy 11), Tommy Hurd, Jody Harrison (c), Toby Gorbould, Chris Owen, Kieran Hack (James Underhill 55),
Johnathan Watt (Lee Perry 63), Liam Bartley, Damian Didwell, Mark Thompson.

BLOATERS
0, FAKENHAM
TOWN 0
Yet more selection problems for the Bloaters manager. Bobby Hill had
been called up by his employers, the Army, James Underhill was unavailable and Jody Harrison had work commitments. However, Chris Owen
was at last available, Johnathan Watt was back and Damien Didwell was sufficiently recovered from injury to take a seat on
the bench.

Back: C Owen, M Thompson, L Bartley, T Gorbould, W Lewis, J Short, D Didwell, D Barnes,
T Reeves (physio).
Front: O Harrison, J Watt, J Hardy, A Sewell, N Banham, P Gartland
Yarmouth set off into the warm sunshine and had three chances
in the opening few minutes but Jacob Short shot over the bar, Mark Thompson had his effort blocked and Liam Bartley’s
shot was saved by ‘keeper Matthew Sayer.
Fakenham,
without a point so far and having shipped 17 goals in their four league games (plus the twelve in the FA Cup at Dereham) were
first to win a corner in the fifth minute and young Yarmouth full back Adam Sewell was in the right place to head off the
line. Moments later Fakenham had another chance but Nick Banham saved the header from Daniel Gates cross.
Back
on the attack, Yarmouth saw Bartley’s angled shot go
over, then Thompson beat two men on the byeline but his cross was met by Chris Owen with no tangible outcome for the Bloaters.
For all these efforts, the game seemed somewhat laboured in the unaccustomed heat and play was generally lackadaisical, Bartley’s
runs excepted.
Jordan
Hardy, Short and Thompson combined well in the 13th minute only to win a throw-in. On the quarter-hour, Yarmouth mounted a relatively sustained attack on the Fakenham penalty
area but the final outcome was an off-balance shot by Short that caused no problem for Sayer, who then did well to claim the
ball from Thompson’s head as they both went up in the visitors’ area.
A
shot from Joseph Wilkes that narrowly missed Banham’s far post was all Fakenham could muster in reply in the 16th
minute. Johnathan Watt then completely missed his kick at a Bartley pass in front of the Fakenham area but the Bloaters won
their first corner after 18 minutes with Thompson’s kick being headed away by Jamie Broady.
Banham
raced out of his area to kick away a through ball just before Fakenham subbed Troy Leeder for Luke Goss after 19 minutes.
Yarmouth then won a second corner and Thompson’s kick
rebounded off two heads in the area and when it fell for Short he lifted his attempt over the bar.
Leeder
should have scored in the 27th minute after a bad pass left him in possession in midfield but having taken the
ball through the Fakenham substitute saw the advancing Banham block the shot on the edge of the area. Sayer was the forced
out of his goal by Short’s advance after receiving from Bartley and the ball was put out for a throw by the ‘keeper.
Bartley
steered a shot wide after 33 minutes, then Wilkes was the next to miss as Fakenham began to see more of the ball. Yet another
Yarmouth corner kick went unconverted in the 37th minute, but the Bloaters went close after 41 when Sayer saved a Bartley shot at the second attempt with Short just not quick enough to collect the momentary
spill by the ‘keeper.
In
the next minute, Banham saved his side by diverting a low shot round the post for a corner which was soon followed by three
more, which took the game to half time
HT
0-0.
Yarmouth would need to sharpen up their finishing in the second half as in the first 45 they had not had one convincing direct
shot at Sayer. In the first ten minutes, Yarmouth had at least
three openings but failed to convert. Firstly, Bartley and Short combined with the former taking the return out to near the
corner flag from where he sent in a lovely flighted cross to the far post but this was missed by attackers and defenders alike;
then, another Thompson corner to the near post was headed away without serious challenge, and finally from a Hardy free kick
Short had two attempts to score, Sayer half-saving the first and the striker putting the second wide of the open goal.
Adam
Sewell came up to support the attack and blasted one effort wide after a return ball from Bartley in the Fakenham area on
the hour, and staying up he then miskicked an intended cross which sailed over the bar. Damian Didwell was put on in the 62nd
minute in an effort to perk things up but it was Sewell who again caught the eye with three crosses, then a long throw which
was gobbled up by Sayer with no Yarmouth player seeming to
have an appetite for it.
Didwell,
who was injecting a bit of urgency into Yarmouth, and Owen
worked the ball to the byeline but the cross to Bartley was met by yet another weak shot and there was another chance gone.
A 74th minute corner finally found a Yarmouth head
but Toby Gorbould’s effort was saved by the diving Sayer who was having a busy afternoon. Yarmouth then brought on Daniel Barnes for Olly Harrison in another attempt to pep the home
attack but it was Short who came closest of anybody to scoring all afternoon when he put a shot against the bar in the 77th
minute.
Fakenham
players were now going down for physio attention frequently, and the pauses at least allowed players of both sides to take
on some water as the hot conditions took their toll. Fakenham then mounted two attacks of note, Kevin Clipston and Steven
Hill shooting but not causing Banham to overexert himself.
A
long ball from Hardy found Short who shot wide in the 87th minute, and two minutes later Owen did likewise. The
last notable action of the game saw Short booked for allegedly bringing down Hill out on the Fakenham left. Shortly after,
the referee brought a tedious game to a welcome close but with Yarmouth’s
players and supporters wondering how they failed to win this match given all their possession and chances.
Yarmouth – Nick Banham, Adam Sewell, Jordan Hardy, Toby Gorbould, Will Lewis, Chris Owen, Olly
Harrison (Daniel Barnes 75), Johnathan Watt, Liam Bartley, Jacob Short, Mark Thompson (Damian Didwell 62). Unused sub: Paul
