Saturday 6th September 2008
Bloaters 5, Long Melford 1

At a blustery Wellesey Road, Melford crumbled to their fourth consecutive defeat, again conceding five goals as they did in the FA Cup against Boston Town.

Playing into the fierce wind Melford started in a promising mode,  forcing  the first corner of the game, and  then creating a good chance  to take the lead, Durell making a fine run  and pass but Daw could not find the net with his close range shot.

For the first  fifteen minutes the game was evenly poised, but the movement and running of Woodcock, Lamb and Bartley started to present problems for Melford. Upfront the  holding and shielding  of the ball by the experienced Roach was also producing  another difficult dimension for the Melford defence.

With little relief being provided from the constant pressure, the Melford defence yielded  after 26 minutes when the energetic WOODCOCK ran along the Melford line without real challenge and casually picked his spot shooting past Croll in the Melford goal.

Three minutes later and the lead was increased with  keeper Croll misjudging a Palmer free kick in the blustery wind, the ball being retrieved from the byline by AGER who bundled the ball into the net.

It was now almost one way traffic, Adams slipping over on a clearance and Bartley firing only inches wide. The confidence of the Melford team seemed to drop lower and again some poor marking allowed LAMB through on goal unchallenged to put the ball into the net.

Just as it looked as though Melford had reached the safety of the half time whistle, the fourth goal came for Yarmouth: again some neat interchanging between Roach  and Woodcock set up LAMB who again in space picked his spot to shoot past keeper Croll.

HT: 4-0

Five minutes into the second half, Melford grabbed a goal: some excellent work by Brind  saw his fine cross to the far post met by CHISHOLM who chipped the ball into the net past 'keeper  Hilton.

Within a few minutes Melford could have been back in the game: the hardworking Potter found space down the right flank and his cross found Daw but he was unable to convert from close range.

After this little flurry it was back to Yarmouth action with Roach heading just wide and Woodcock putting his shot wide of the upright. At the other end there was a solitary long range shot from Bull wide of the target, with  Yarmouth going back to force a corner at the other end. The corner, swung in by Palmer, beat the punch of 'keeper Croll,  and there was AGER to prod home from close range.

Just time for Yarmouth to almost claim goal six when Bartley fired towards the corner of the net, but Croll excelled with a fine flying save to thwart the home team.
